Houston Bodyboarding Camps changed my life. I had high expectations after signing up 2 weeks before the camp was to begin and every expectation was met and exceeded.
Jared and his family are some of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Their home and property in Puerto Rico is mystical. The vibe nourishes your body and minds need for nature. I found myself constantly receiving a calming sense of peace. I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable. After a long day of surfing, stretching and eating delicious meals, the Airbnb apartment behind their house, El Cucubano, was the perfect place to come home to.
I had several goals during my trip that Jared worked with me on daily, but probably the biggest goal of the trip was to learn more about competing professionally. Not only did I learn just about everything I needed to know, but Jared helped me gain the confidence I needed to commit to taking action towards making some of the biggest decisions of my life. He encouraged me in ways that I truly needed to take the next step mentally. Sure enough, after my time with Jared at Houston Bodyboarding Camps, I went on to compete in the 2019 Mike Stewart Pipeline Invitational Trials event. I ended up making it into the main event by ironically beating some of the guys that I consider to be the best from Puerto Rico. Without Jared’s camp and confidence in me, none of that would have been possible. Now I’m more motivated than ever and only just getting started in the sport that I’ve loved for almost all my life.
I recommend this camp for anyone who is interested in getting excellent advice on how to improve their bodyboarding skills or anyone who is just in love with the sport of bodyboarding.
Choosing to attend Houston Bodyboarding Camps was one of best decisions that we’ve ever made. From the moment we arrived and met Jared at the airport, we suspected the week we had ahead of us was going to be exceptional, and it was! Bodyboarding is a passion that we both share: one of us (Luis) has been practicing for over 15 years; the other (Deanna) just got started last year. Nevertheless, Jared was able to provide targeted training techniques that were suited to our individual goals and levels of expertise.
Jared is an amazing coach and person and his passion and energy for coaching was contagious. In just one week, we were able to improve our approaches to riding waves of all kinds (wedges, reef breaks, beach breaks) and even picked up a few new moves along the way. We were able to train at both high-performance waves that offered new challenges, as well as work more specifically on each of our goals at quiet, coconut-strewn beaches with great waves and killer views.
It was very inspiring to share time with Jared and his family and to be part of the experience they’ve built. The lodging, El Cucubano, and the property (filled with animals, trees, and flowers) were absolutely serene, providing the perfect atmosphere for restful sleeping after multiple hours in the water. Mornings were met with the sweet smell of freshly brewed coffee and clean and nourishing food that set us up for success each day.
To say that the camp was transformative is an understatement. Both of us left having improved our bodyboarding skills tenfold and with newfound confidence in the sport. Jared’s mentorship and training have motivated us to take our practice to the next level. The camp was both extremely fun and intense (each evening we found ourselves sleeping like babies after a fulfilling day of surf). It’s exactly this mixture of fun and intensity that allowed us to progress as much as we did and stoked a fire in us that can’t be extinguished. Houston Bodyboarding Camps changed us and we couldn’t be more thankful.
